OneLake is a single integrated, logical data lake for your entire organization. OneLake comes automatically with every Microsoft tenant, with no infrastructure to manage.
Like OneDrive, OneLake data can be easily explored from within Windows using the OneLake Explorer. Right in the Explorer, you can navigate all your workspaces and easily upload, download or modify files, just as you can in Office. OneLake’s File Explorer simplifies data lakes, putting them in the hands of even non-technical business users.
In addition, OneLake is divided into data domains, providing support for Data Mesh
data governance. Furthermore, OneLake counters data silos with so-called “shortcuts. These are basically virtual copies of data from other “data lakes,” making it seem as if the data is physically present in your data lake. This has the advantage of not having to copy & duplicate your data. Finally, OneLake uses open-source technology ‘delta lake‘ which has the advantage that the data is easier to exchange and also integrations with e.g. AWS Data Lakes are possible.
