It can’t be missed. The flood of news about changing laws and regulations regarding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and mandatory Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) reporting. The delivery of this reporting seems to have become an end in itself, with us being confronted with news reports and surveys every so often with the same message: “most companies are not yet ready for CSRD.” But reporting on ESG performance according to the mandatory CSRD is also a must, right? Well no… <\/span><\/p>\n

We know by now that a significant portion of organizations in the Netherlands are putting off preparing for CSRD reporting. And that is quite logical. After all, proper preparation takes a lot of time, attention, resources and capacity. At the same time, we believe it is a missed opportunity if only time and effort is put into preparing organizations for the mandatory reporting, because then ESG will always remain a ‘must do’. <\/p>\n

In this article, we shed light on the purpose behind CSRD reporting. We also share a practical approach to deploy ESG data, which is the basis for CSRD reporting, within your business operations, no matter what stage your company is in. <\/p>\n

Again, what is the purpose of the CSRD?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There are a lot of new ESG laws and regulations coming out of Brussels. In my previous blog <\/a><\/u>I already discussed the CSRD requirement from the EU for certain organizations to publish CSRD reports starting in fiscal year 2024. Of course, the ultimate goal of the EU is not simply to mandate a new reporting stream, but ultimately the goal is to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth.

Growth opportunities for organizations that integrate ESG criteria<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Organizations that smartly integrate ESG criteria within their strategy and operations can thereby increase their growth opportunities. After all, by complying with sustainability standards, they can not only gain access to growth capital, but also increase sales (award tenders), reduce risks, stimulate innovation, strengthen brand reputation and attract top talent. So doing business sustainably and responsibly based on ESG data can also provide competitive advantage. <\/p>\n

What steps can you take now?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

First, it is important to set direction and understand where your organization currently stands in its ambition and implementation of a sustainability strategy. To do this, use tools such as the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA)<\/a><\/u>, Theory of Change (ToC)<\/a><\/u> and The Five Dimensions of Impact (IMP)<\/a><\/u> To map out your ESG goals. <\/p>\n

  1. Concretize ESG goals. For this, use an existing framework within your sector or make a selection of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations that are relevant to your organization. Using such frameworks helps you translate ESG ambitions into goals that are recognizable and measurable for your organization. <\/li>\n
  2. Define KPIs. The European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) accompanying the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) consist of 245 pages, two general and 10 thematic reporting standards and 1231 data points. This is practically unworkable. So keep it simple and select a limited number of KPIs (CO2, Water, Waste, Social, etc). Check with various stakeholders, whether these KPIs are unambiguous, clear and measurable. <\/li>\n
  3. Make sustainability part of your management reports. To do so, develop and implement ESG reports in your own BI environment. Determine what ESG data is available what is the gap, if any, in the provision of information. <\/li>\n
  4. Get ESG data management in order: Excel is of course one way to collect, process and publish your ESG data, however, we do not recommend it. The ESG reporting process requires a structured working method of data processing, management and reporting in which data quality and security are guaranteed. Use a data platform <\/a><\/u>that lets you make smart use of data automation and AI tools, such as CoPilot, for example. <\/li>\n
  5. Bring your sustainability impact to life. Storytelling is crucial and ESG data requires the right context. To do this, use data visualization tools such as interactive dashboards, infographics and case studies to visualize your sustainability ambitions and performance and supplement them with qualitative substantiation. Make the ESG report not just part of the annual report, but publish it on your corporate website and also involve it in regular business updates to share challenges and opportunities and receive ideas from within the organization. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
