Usually I work six weeks from Italy and then two weeks in the Netherlands. For me, that flexibility is one of the great advantages of working at Beeminds.

Early start

My day starts early. I have breakfast with a cappuccino and a bowl of oatmeal. Then I take a quick walk around the garden. Remove some weeds here and there (a job that never ends), I check how the plants are doing and if the lemon trees have some fruit yet. That moment outside helps me to start the work day calmly but focused, and then I dive into my mailbox.

The daily stand-up

As with many teams, we start the day with a short daily stand-up. There we discuss what everyone is working on, what’s going on and if anyone needs help with anything. Then I get to work on my dashboards and contact colleagues or customers. I find that moment of coordination important, because it helps to keep the lines of communication short and to switch quickly when necessary.

First contact with the customer

I work as a Data Consultant with a focus on Power BI. In that role, I help organizations turn data into insights that people can really use. Many organizations have huge amounts of data, but don’t always know exactly what information they need or what is actually possible with their data. Then I start a conversation with them. What questions do they want answered? What information do they need to make better decisions?
This is not just about technology. Of course the data in a Power BI report must be correct, but the report must also be clear and understandable to end users. They need to see at a glance what they are looking at and what it means for their daily work.

“Of course the data in a Power BI report must be correct, but in addition, the report must be clear and understandable to the end users. There I work together with data engineers from Beeminds and with colleagues from UNICEF. The Data Engineers ensure that through the Intelligenthive® the data becomes available for the next phase: analysis and reporting. This is often an interplay between the business and the data engineers. Together we determine which data needs to become available and which business rules need to be defined in the data model.

My role is to translate the needs of the business into technology and then make them understandable in a Power BI report. This means that I am constantly switching between different perspectives: what does the organization want to know, what data is needed for this and how do we translate this into a clear and usable dashboard? That is also what I like best about my work. I am exactly in between two worlds: on the one hand the technology and the data and on the other hand the people who work with it. Meanwhile, I am also learning more and more about data engineering, and it is great that at Beeminds I get the space to develop myself further in this area.

“My role is to translate the needs of the business into technology and then provide insight into a Power BI report. “

Célina Morad

Time for lunch

Around noon, I take a break. If my friend is not home, I keep it simple and make a cheese sandwich. I always bring that with me from the Netherlands. But today lunch looks different. My boyfriend is home and he likes to cook and also very well. On the menu is spaghetti con colatura di alici, a sauce based on fermented anchovies. With some parsley and garlic, it is a surprisingly simple but delicious dish.

One dashboard for thousands of emails

A recent job I enjoyed was an email dashboard for UNICEF Netherlands. The organization sends thousands of emails every month to people who have previously donated. The goal is to gain insight into how those email campaigns are performing. Are the emails being opened? Are links being clicked on? Or do they disappear straight into the spam folder? That involves quite a bit of data. Together with colleagues, we determine which data is relevant and which business rules go with it. Once the data engineers have prepared the data, I work with it in Power BI to create a clear dashboard.

A little supping

I walk down into the village toward the beach. The weather is nice today, so I go supping on the sea. In southern Italy, they dine late. My friend cooks. The cuisine here is simple and pure. Today we eat octopus in tomato sauce with olives, capers and parsley. Ordered from the local fisherman who had caught it that morning. Once a week I also take Italian lessons. Understanding is going well. Talking is another story. In the south, they often speak in their dialect and that differs enough from standard Italian to regularly doubt whether or not I understand it well.

When is my workday successful?

What I like best about my work is when a dashboard really comes to life in an organization. When people look at it daily and use it to make decisions.
That’s when you know it’s working. Because ultimately, a good dashboard is not just about visualizing data, but about helping people make better decisions.

I live in southern Italy, where I spend much of the year working remotely for Beeminds, but I also come to the Netherlands regularly.
